How to use Tres Leches

Tres Leches teaches Mexican Spanish through short lessons with the characters of a friendly neighborhood. Each lesson takes a few minutes.

Your first minute

  1. Enter your name when asked. The characters use it in conversations.
  2. You land on the map: a winding path of characters. Tap the glowing one and press START.
  3. Finish a lesson to unlock the next character on the path.

The map

Inside a lesson

  1. New words: hear the word, see what it means, tap the card to hear it again. Saying it is optional. Tap the mic and say it, or type it. Next word moves on.
  2. Practice: matching, building phrases, filling in blanks, choosing a reply, and short conversations.
  3. Answer by tapping or by speaking. Tap the mic and talk, and it stops listening when you stop.
  4. After each answer, Chispa tells you if you were right and shows the correct one if not. Missed words come back later in the lesson.
  5. To leave, tap the X. Progress in that lesson isn't saved, but slices you earned are yours.

Tip: accents and small spelling slips are forgiven when you speak or type.

Cakes, slices and racha

Mi cocina (my kitchen)

Tap the flame or cake at the top of the map to open it.

Free account

The first lessons need no account. To keep going past the early lessons, make a free account. It has no ads, and it saves your cakes, racha and badges if you change phones. You can sign out or delete your account from Mi cocina.

Reminders

After your first lesson, Chispa offers one friendly reminder at 7 pm on days you haven't practiced. You can change this later in iPhone Settings → Notifications.

Microphone trouble

If speaking doesn't work, allow Microphone and Speech Recognition for Tres Leches in iPhone Settings. You can always tap or type instead.
